Growth Beyond Experience

Let's dive into a topic that's essential for consultants at every stage of their careers: learning and development. While experience is invaluable (and much expected) in the consulting world, it's crucial to recognize that the journey of growth and improvement never ends. Whether you're a seasoned consultant with years of experience under your belt or you’re just starting your consulting journey, embracing continuous learning is the key to staying relevant, expanding your expertise, and maximizing your potential.

Why is continuous learning important for consultants, even those with many years of experience? I’ll give you a few compelling reasons:

  1. Adaptability in a Changing Landscape: The business landscape is constantly evolving, with new technologies (ChatGPT, I’m looking at you!), methodologies, and challenges emerging regularly. Sure, you could learn how to navigate these new technologies, methodologies, and challenges by trial and error—sometimes, you’re forced to—but you’ll feel more grounded in your uncertainty if the learning begins on your terms (continue reading for learning opportunities). Keep a growth mindset so you can adapt to these changes and equip yourself with the latest tools and best practices. This adaptability not only enhances your problem-solving capabilities but also helps you provide innovative and forward-thinking solutions to your clients.
  2. Expanding Horizons: There are soooo many learning opportunities for consultants, regardless of their experience level. Engaging in continuous learning allows you to explore new industries, practice cross-functional skills, and broaden your perspective on client challenges. Maybe you take a course through Coursera or Udemy, tell your team to send you to a conference, or teach new concepts to friends and family… anything that will increase your exposure to the new topic you want to learn and allows you to engage with your new vocabulary. Embrace curiosity and soak up everything you can. Clients really appreciate when you can have informed conversations about the tradeoffs between newfangled approaches and tools.
  3. Enhancing Client Value: Learning and development directly translates into increased value for your clients. By keeping up with industry trends, best practices, and marketplace movements, you can blow your stakeholders away with up-to-date insights and innovative solutions. Clients seek consultants who are knowledgeable, adaptable, and capable of guiding them through complex business struggles or unpredictable economic environments. Read the news… 2023 has been complex and unpredictable and a little bit weird. 2024 will likely be a tangled ball of yarn, too. By investing in your own development, you elevate your ability to provide valuable expertise and navigate the gray.

Alright, let's get tactical. Here are some learning opportunities that you can take advantage of today:

  • Industry-specific certifications or advanced degree programs
  • Participation in industry associations, conferences, and networking events (Day One has some great in-person and virtual options)
  • Mentorship programs or coaching sessions—to learn about an industry, function, OR even yourself (I have to plug Tori Stevens here!)
  • Reading relevant books, articles, and research papers (soooo many great books and videos to watch, reach out to me for recommendations!)
  • Collaborating with colleagues on challenging projects or joining cross-functional teams (remember that “trial-and-error” approach I talked about?)

Questions to ponder:

  1. What is one new skill or body of knowledge that—if you had it—would make you a better consultant TODAY?
  2. How can you integrate learning and development into your daily routine to stay ahead of other consultants in your industry?
